  • Issued from " stray pebbles " meteorites are ubiquitous natural objects in the solar system . They affect the natural sciences as well as planetology and astronomy, but also the arts, literature and of course social sciences because of their strong emotional value . In addition , there are a wide variety of mental representations on the phenomena of meteors and meteorites . Among these representations , we must demystify the irrational fears while taking into account the real risks (formation of craters and massive events such as falls Tunguska and Chelyabinsk ) .
  • We know that 10 meteorites fall each year in France . During XIXth century meteorites were finded evrery two years, against only once every 10 years for XX centuray. This results from the evolution of lifestyles : falls have no witnesses. A first aim of this project is to become at least as good at XIX th century or better . Moreover, we know that most meteorites come from the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter , however , we do not know what asteroids are the parent bodies ! A second goal of this project is to determine the sources of the various classes of meteorites regions.
  • From these facts come the idea to replace visual witnesses by a network of cameras covering the territory , at least one hundred ( or a little more than one per department ) . This network will allow us to accurately determine the orbit of each bolide ( meteor ), a precise orbit will give us strong constraints on the source region of the fireball and it will also provide us with valuable information on the location of the meteor fall (now between meteorite time ) .
  • Another major motivation of FRIPON project is to train the public recognition of meteorites . Indeed, the areas affected by falls are typically of the order of thirty km 2 , too large to go to a small number of individuals, and the idea is to initiate a citizen network to provide local pools of "meteorites researchers ." This project is obviously seen as an opportunity to strengthen and develop contacts between the worlds of research , scientific mediation, education and the public to disseminate knowledge in an informal way around meteorites and Planetology .
  • By accumulating images of the sky over the entire surface of France for a minimum duration of 10 years, the FRIPON project will provide an opportunity to harvest unprecedant amount of data, it will be an opportunity to develop new applications ( weather , astronomy basic variation of luminosity of the brightest stars , space debris ... ) . Images from the cameras will be ​​available to different stakeholders ( scientists, public ...) .
  • The sustainability of this project is based primarily on the commitment of a large number of scientific institutions bound by the ANR project FRIPON , both nationally (MNHN , Paris Observatory, Université Paris Sud, Université d’Aix Marseille, CNRS and CNES) at the regional level ( institutions regional scientific coordinators ) . Support the National Council of Astronomers and physicists (CNAP)is under negotiation , because it has a strong competence in projects conducted along a very long term through its services Comments are stains Observatories Sciences of the Universe. We also plan on supporting Universcience , some Museums in region and especially on the relay made ​​by associations, including those that relate to the French Astronomy Association (AFA) and the Geological Society of France ( SGF ).
